چکیده

Introduction Soles, as most of flatfishes, live in sandy bottoms in order to guarantee food availability and protection from predators (Kruuk, 1963). In commercial sole culture, the use of sand has been considered a serious obstacle to maintain hygienic conditions (Howell, 1997), but problems arise when they are kept on hard-bottomed tanks without sand. A higher occurrence of Black Patch Necrosis (BPN) (McVicar & White, 1979, 1982), a significant increase in metabolic rate (Howell & Canario, 1987), and even pigmentation abnormalities (Dinis et al 1999) have been attributed to sand deprivation.

Visual discrimination of spectral distributions.

Human observers seem to be able to use different features that classify materials with a large degree of accuracy. In this paper, we look at human perception of statistical properties of the spectral distribution in a scene. We investigated whether human observers can discriminate just as accurately between coloured textures that have a spectral distribution due either to shading only or to bot...

Discrimination of oriented visual textures by poultry chicks

We investigated how poultry chicks discriminate textures of lines sharing a common orientation from textures of variably oriented lines. Stimulus colours along with illumination were adjusted to selectively stimulate different receptor mechanisms. Chicks could discriminate achromatic textures, but not textures isoluminant to the double cones that gave a long vs. medium wavelength chromatic sign...

Improved Textures for 3d Virtual Reconstruction and Visualization by a Modified Multiscale Texture Synthesis Approach

When photos of walls are used in urban 3D visualizations they are often of limited quality due to the fact that it can be very hard, or even impossible, to take close up photos of the whole part of walls, especially for buildings with several floors. Thus walls will appear either pixelized or blurry when the viewer comes close to them. The latter if some kind of interpolation technique is being...

Disruptive Colouration and Perceptual Grouping

Camouflage is the primary defence of many animals and includes multiple strategies that interfere with figure-ground segmentation and object recognition. While matching background colours and textures is widespread and conceptually straightforward, less well explored are the optical 'tricks', collectively called disruptive colouration, that exploit perceptual grouping mechanisms. Adjacent high ...
